Lake Garda

Malcesine

Malcesine is a small old town on the eastern shore of Lake Garda, between the water and Monte Baldo. Cobbled lanes climb from the harbour to the Castello Scaligero, where we say yes. Goethe sat here in 1786 sketching the castle.

In September the lake is still warm, the evenings are mild and the town is calm again after the summer. The cable car takes you up Monte Baldo for the view over the whole lake.

Tip: the old town is car-free and has steps. Bring comfortable shoes.

Getting there

By plane

  • Verona (VRN) is the closest airport, about 1 h 15 by car.
  • Bergamo (BGY), about 2 h by car.
  • Milan Linate (LIN) about 2 h 30 and Milan Malpensa (MXP) about 3 h by car.

By train

Take the train to Verona Porta Nuova. From there continue by car, or by bus along the eastern shore of the lake.

By car and bus

Malcesine lies on the lakeside road along the eastern shore (SR249). ATV buses run along the shore from Verona and the southern lake towns. Parking in town is limited: share rides where you can.

By boat

The Lake Garda ferries (Navigazione Lago di Garda) stop at Malcesine, and the crossing to Limone on the western shore is a lovely short trip.
